travel europe greece athens syntagma square

Syntagma Square, or Constitution Square is often the starting point for tourists.
Across the street is the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
A few blocks away is the Plaka, the older part of the city.
When we visited in 1978 and 1984, it was a pleasant green shaded park.
On this last trip in 2013, it felt like a place I wanted to avoid.
